BC High School Track and Field Day 1 Recap

BC High School Track and Field Day 1 Recap

Provincial Champs kick off with a bang

The first day of BC High School Championships after a two year hiatus proved eventful. Despite the uncharacteristic rain athletes showed tremendous grit as champions were celebrated and outstanding performances were produced for an exhilarating meet with far more in store for day two and day three.

The first champions of the meet were crowned after the junior girls and boys steeplechase finals were run. Jaina Kang edged out Rachel McDonald for the victory in the junior girls race while James Hodgson came away with the win after running a majority of the race. Despite a possible DQ scare, Hodgson earned the victory and later competed in the junior boys’ flat 1500m heats where he managed to muster enough energy to qualify for tomorrow’s final. Hodgson will also compete in the junior boys’ 3000m on Saturday.

The 1500m heats were exciting. As expected Maya Baechler and Christina Peet Williams made it through to the senior girls final while Caiden Lee, who was followed closely by UBC commit Michael Schreimer, controlled his heat and earned his spot in the much anticipated final. These finals will be closely contested, and the eventual champions will have to work hard and perform at their best to earn a gold medal.

In the Senior Girls Long Jump Madison Gordon came away with a victory that is not only an incredible achievement for Gordon, but is essential in scoring points and giving their team a legitimate shot at the team title. These early points put R.E. Mountain is in a strong position heading into two more full days of competition. Deven Marrero is your 2022 BCHS senior men’s javelin champion as he threw an impressive 49.75m in the rain. Chima Obi Nzeadibe won the men’s special olympic shot put. He threw 8.35m which narrowly beat John Diego who threw an impressive 8.30m for silver.

Expect more drama and exciting results tomorrow as more champions will be crowned and team title contenders will emerge. AthletePics will be onsite to cover every bit of news as it comes in.
